Python sprint weekend May 10-11

Forwarded from python-dev. Does anyone want to host a get-together
for Saturday the 10th?

==========================

Following on from the success of previous sprint/bugfix weekends and
sprinting efforts at PyCon 2008, I'd like to propose the next two
Global Python Sprint Weekends take place on the following dates:

        * May 10th-11th (four days after 2.6a3 and 3.0a5 are released)
        * June 21st-22nd (~week before 2.6b2 and 3.0b2 are released)

It seems there are a few of the Python User Groups keen on meeting
up in person and sprinting collaboratively, akin to PyCon, which I
highly recommend. I'd like to nominate Saturday across the board
as the day for PUGs to meet up in person, with Sunday geared more
towards an online collaboration day via IRC, where we can take care
of all the little things that got in our way of coding on Saturday
(like finalising/preparing/reviewing patches, updating tracker and
    documentation, writing tests ;-).

For User Groups that are planning on meeting up to collaborate,
please reply to this thread on python-dev at python.org and let every-
    one know your intentions!

As is commonly the case, #python-dev on irc.freenode.net will be
the place to be over the course of each sprint weekend; a large
proportion of Python developers with commit access will be present,
increasing the amount of eyes available to review and apply patches.

For those that have an idea on areas they'd like to sprint on and
want to look for other developers to rope in (or just to communicate
plans in advance), please also feel free to jump on this thread via
    python-dev(at) and indicate your intentions.

For those that haven't the foggiest on what to work on, but would
like to contribute, the bugs tracker at http://bugs.python.org is
the best place to start. Register an account and start searching
for issues that you'd be able to lend a hand with.

All contributors that submit code patches or documentation updates
will typically get listed in Misc/ACKS.txt; come September when the
final release of 2.6 and 3.0 come about, you'll be able to point at
the tarball or .msi and exclaim loudly ``I helped build that!'',
and actually back it up with hard evidence ;-)

Bring on the pizza and Red Bull!

        Trent.

Cool! Looks very interesting... so basically the idea is
gather some ZPUGsters and join #python-dev to fix Python bugs?

The Arlington Career Center would be more than happy to host a sprint during
the weekend of May 10 and 11. Just let us know.

If anyone's interested in doing so, sure! If there aren't enough
people interested in Python core development, there could be a Plone
sprint alongside; I'm happy to help any python-dev participants. It
could be a coffee-shop-type sprint like the last one, or we could take
up Jeffrey's offer to host it in Arlington.

I don't think we'd need to have a physical meeting on both days of the
weekend, because that's quite a commitment, and Sunday of that weekend
is also Mother's Day (speaking of events conflicting with
holidays...).

Can we nail down whether or not we'll try to have a ZPUG event on May
10th for the global sprint day? I think it's good to have an event
even if most of the sprinters are working on Plone or some other
project.

The two locations on the table are currently:

* Hold it in a coffee shop somewhere downtown that has free wireless.
* Hold it at the Arlington Career Center, thanks to Jeffrey Elkner.

Because the weather is getting so nice, I think few people would come
for an entire day; so I think just a half-day would be fine, maybe
something like 1PM-5PM. What does everyone think?

Sure, I believe Matt Bowen is suggesting that we do it here:

I'm very interested in the global aspect of this, having just
returned from meeting Tarek Ziade in Paris.

I can probably do something close to 9AM-5PM. We also want
to overlap with people in different timezones, right?

I missed their Parts Party but I also suggested this over email to Andrew
Righter(at)hacdc and he seems to think it's a great idea. It will be nice to
have a local hackspace for this kind of thing.

That's an *awesome* idea; let's go for it! Do they have working
wireless in the space at this time? Wireless is a critical
requirement, I think. I'll write to the HACDC info address.

That would be nice. However, I'm not optimistic about people wanting
to spend an entire spring day inside, which is why I've been talking
about a half day.

Y'all beat me to it: I was planning to write yesterday mentioning
that. At the Hac DC Grand Opening party on Sunday, words like
"sprint" and "barcamp" kept coming up. The main office space is
a wee bit limited (considering the amount of crap... er, raw
materials... that people brought in during a single event), but
there's an auditorium / dining space shared by the various non-
profits that call the upper floor home. With enough advance,
the shared space can be reserved for special events. Or so it
was said.

At the moment, no Internet. I'm horrible with names, but one
guy who works at least part time for the 9:30 Club said he was
sure he could manage to "beam a signal" to the church, and we
all treked up onto the roof, talking about attaching antennas
to the cross on the steeple. ;-) No thought as to how the
"management" would feel about that. ;-)
