external file system storage and file modification

Hello, ZPUGDC.

We're using the Plone products AttachmentField, FileSystemStorage and
PloneExFile and they're running well. However, we'd like to be able to
have batch system processes external to Zope overwriting the file
content stored on the file system.

Our exisiting configuration involves automated uploading via Zope FTP
and that has proved unreliable. Every couple dozen Zope FTP file uploads
randomly fail without error. We've also seen the same Zope FTP
unreliability with manual desktop to server uploads of large collections
of files.

Either way, we have multiple gigabytes worth of daily-revised files that
we need to serve via Zope/Plone but store on the file system. Has anyone
done something similar? Any best practices? Thanks!

FYI, we are aware of Ingeniweb's file modification caveat: "Can I modify
content directly on FileSystem? No it's dangerous, contents using
FileSystemStorage are not notified about filesystem modifications."

Looks like ExternalStorage may handle this better than

you might also want to look at ATManagedFile and Enfold Desktop (free
for non-commercial use). The DavPack product is supposed to improve
WebDAV performance and reliability.

If you are interested, I have some email messages which discuss the
differences between the 3 external storage products: ATMF, ES and FSS.

Same here. Perhaps, someone could post these to ZPUGDC site?
