Subject: [Membership] 2.1 Release Schedule / We Need Your Help
Date: Wed, 05 Oct 2005 09:55:18 -0700
Dear Foundation Members:
We will be officially releasing Plone 2.1 with a big marketing push
during the week of October 13 (see details below)
WE NEED COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION!
The Plone Foundation is putting a press release on major newswires, and
we are looking for community support in the following areas:
* A) Help cover PR costs
It will cost the Foundation about $1200 to send this press release
item widely to the US and some international technology news media.
This is an important thing--it generates reviews of Plone in
technology press, and this can be very helpful for those of us who
sell Plone solutions.
If you're a Plone integrator or re-seller, *please* consider
donating to help defray this cost. We're asking for donations of any
amount to help. A reasonable yardstick would be $100 per full-time
developer you use to create/sell Plone solutions. If we can get a
response like this from our integrators/resellers, it will easily
cover this cost. Consider the positive selling quotes the 2.0
release generated for us, such as the fantastic eWeek review.
You can donate at http://plone.org/Members/pupq/21release
Everyone who donates will receive public recognition for it in the
form of a link on the What's New in Plone 2.1 page.
* B) Help prepare marketing materials
The PR will bring more visitors to look at plone.org, and we'd like
to improve our public face for this. Paul will be asking the
marketing group to help him update the plone.org homepage and
possibly create a straightforward, but public-friendly homepage for
plone.net. If you have some design resources, please consider
helping Paul with this. You can reach him to offer help at
paul(at)zope-europe.org.
RELEASE DETAILS
Here is the release timeline for 2.1:
- Request a 2.1.1 bug-fix release, timed for 10 days from today (about
October 9th, give or take a day or two to fit everyone's schedules).
This should incorporate any bugs found in 2.1, but not new features.
- Have Enfold Systems and Tyrell Corp make 2.1.1 Windows and OSX
installers in early October. (& and always, thanks to them for this
critical resource!)
- Send out the 2.1 press release after the 2.1.1 release is ready,
sometime between Oct 13-20.
We've chosen this path so that the people who learn about Plone 2.1 from
the press will have a stable system to use--there have been a few bugs
uncovered in 2.1 that the board felt should be fixed prior to focusing
attention on the release.
THANKS
Thanks to everyone who's helped with the 2.1 release--our best Plone
ever!
Special thanks to Alex Limi for writing much of the "What's new in Plone
2.1" docs, Whit Morriss for managing the press release process, Paul
Everitt for doing a lot of the in-between running, Stephan Holek for
being our rock-star release manager, and all of our fantastic developers
for creating such a great release.
