Can anyone recommend a Plone product within which you can track and
manage hardware/software?
Thanks,
Cynthia

Essentially, this sort of thing is very easy to do with Archetypes, since most
inventory systems are just straightforward tables with fields like
asset-name, asset-serial, person-assigned-to, etc. I don't know of any
pre-built ones, but it would be a great, straightforward app for ZPUG to work
on, since it sounds like there are at least 2 of y'all interested in the
task.

If you're contemplating asset management I don't need to tell you that
it's sort of like accounting. Mostly in that it's the bit you see is
the tip of the iceberg and there's oodles of complexity underneath.
My old company got bought by Best Software and while I never got to
work on the fixed asset tracking software side I understand Best's
product is still the gold standard in mid-market space. I drunkenly
agreed to port the FAS product to the Web at a conference once but once
everybody sobered up we never spoke of that moment again. Phew!
You might want to have a look at
http://www.BestSoftware.com/FAS
and click around the feature sheet. Not all of the features will apply
to what you're doing but if you do build an honest-to-goodness open
source product you'll need to attract other developers. And this should
give you a good guide of the type of roadmap you'll have to construct
to get others interested.

Okay so I wasn't looking for that level of product but, was wondering
if there would be some type of Plone implementation that a small IT
shop could use to keep track of its hardware/software purchases,
licenses, upgrades, etc.
Per Joel's comment, would there be any interest within ZPUGDC for this
as a future meeting topic or project?

I would be interested in helping with such an effort, if only to sharpen
my plone talons.

To the asset trackers:
Anyone have a list of requirement's?
I would like to see this happen. Enough that I would like to start
working on it.
I need/want to be able to track multiple clients HW/SW. I want to be
able to track:
Hardware/Software
Service Tag/Express Service Code (we do a lot of Dell)
Serial Number
OS, Version, Patchlevel
Architecture
Purpose
IP if static/ DHCP if so on multiple interfaces if extant
SSID/WEP Key if Wireless enabled
MAC(s)
Last audit date / next audit date
Sortable By:
Client /company
Manufacturer / Vendor / OSS project
SW
HW
Anyone have ideas on what is missing how it should be structured?
Should I start a seperate list for it so it doesn't create a bunch of
non plone traffic or should it stay as an example of ongoing development?
Company (folderish):
Name
Address
Phone
PoC
??
Contains:
Hardware (Addable)
ID
S/N
Location
Office, Dept, etc.
Vendor
Service Tag
Express Service Code
OS, Version, Patchlevel
Architecture
Purpose: WS, Server, Network Appliance, Printer
IP if static/ DHCP
SSID
WEP key
MAC(s)
Last audit date
Next audit date
Software (Addable)
ID
Location / Install location by Machine ID
Vendor
Revision/Patch level
Debatable items are Admin names and passwords per machine/app, I'd like
it...
Ideas , suggestions?
